Backdrop is a community-driven fork of Drupal 7 that has a lot of the UX and code concept improvements that Drupal 8 has but without composer, symphony and all the complexities of management that Drupal 8 has.
Backdrop also has some traction in the DH community. Quinn Dumbrowski, for example, is a proponent.
