Offloading WordPress Media Storage for Cloud Idiots

I’ve been pretending it would not happen, but my heavy old WP blog is getting the less than 10% storage remaining. I am skeptical of the plugins that claim to prune the media library and accept I need to consider moving to S3 or elsewhere, like Jim has blogged about all over.

Can anyone give me the basics? I’m in over my head. There is a plugin and service that does this ($)? And then I need some kind of cloudfront set up?

Help me clean house! Thanks

This is Jim.

I think you could do this for $5 a month through Digital Ocean Spaces and have tons of storage and the plugin that does this is S3 Offload from Human made and it is free. I blogged that bit here: https://bavatuesdays.com/human-mades-s3-uploads-plugin/

There is a paid plugin that does the same thing from WP Engine, but the Human Made is better and free, just avoids the fancy UI. This was fun for me to do, I used Amazon’s S3 in that post, but no reason why you couldn’t use Digital Ocean’s Spaces or even Backblaze which folks argue is easier and cheaper. So there are definitely options for the S3 storage piece, and that Human Made plugin is gold.

Perfect. I think I found the first post you had using the paid plugin, but the Human Made one looks doable.

I am not using CloudFlare, can I just set up the domain alias in my cpanel? I dont really know much about the storage but Backblaze looks great, 6TB for $6/month? I could blog for another 3000 years.

Thanks Reverend!
